Artist StatementPart horror film, part pinup fantasy, my artwork strives to bring together the grotesque and the erotic in a nightmarish embrace. I juxtapose the allure of the naked female body with ambiguous spaces of horror, where bodies are dismembered, fractured, and literally consumed. Through my research and interviews, I have found that the unknown can terrify and at the same time arouse viewers. The ambiguity of the figuration in my work attempts to draw out these feelings of sexual desire alongside shock and guilt. The resulting confusion might then allow viewers to question their sexual attractions and to briefly escape the repercussions that threaten our sexual fantasies. I experiment with the tension between fine line and random ink splatters to think about how the mediums I employ, along with the subject matter, can also become erotic or grotesque. |
